The Sunrise Ascent on Mount Washington is a hike up Mount Washington for athletes with physical disabilities. At an elevation of 6,288 feet, the mountain is the highest peak in the northeastern United States.
“The Sunrise Ascent on Mount Washington was the highlight of my summer. I was excited about participating, but I never imagined it having the broad personal impacts that it did. I wasn’t alone in my accomplishment, but part of a team and community of people. This was striking for as I am so often focused on my independence and maintaining that independence, I hadn’t realized how that was limiting my life experiences. As a paraplegic, the opportunity to participate in the Sunrise Ascent allowed me to move from being a minority to a place in the majority… this was incredibly eye-opening and empowering. I am already planning, training and looking forward to the 2014 Ascent!”
